What is “One Golden Summer” about?
Good things happen at the lake. That’s what Alice’s grandmother says, and it’s true. At the age of seventeen Alice had just spent a summer in a cottage with Nan – it was there that she took that photograph, the photograph of three smiling teenagers in a yellow speedboat, the image that changed her life.
Now Alice lives behind a lens. As a photographer, she is most comfortable on the sidelines, allowing others to shine. However, lately, she’s been feeling the urge to do something else, and when Nan falls and breaks her hip, Alice comes up with a plan for both of them: another summer in that magical place, Barry’s Bay. But as soon as they settle in, their peace is disturbed by the sound of a familiar yellow boat and the man piloting it.
Charlie Florek was nineteen years old when Alice photographed him from a distance. Now he’s grown up – a shameless flirt who manages to make Nan laugh and Alice becomes seventeen again, when life was simpler, when taking pictures was just for fun. The sunlit days and warm nights at the lake with Charlie are a balm to Alice’s soul, but when she looks up and sees his sharp green eyes looking straight at her, she begins to worry her heart.
Because Alice watches people – that’s why she’s so good at what she does – but she’s never met anyone who looks back.
