Just four months ago, Lindsey Vonn battled through one of the most traumatic injuries of her legendary career.
Now she’s back in the gym and showing the world that her comeback is really taking off.
The Olympic skiing icon shared an uplifting update on social media this week, posting a training video revealing how far she has come since the horrific crash that left her hospitalized during the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics in February.
Even more encouragingly, Vonn trained without the heavy brace that had become a familiar part of her recovery journey.
Vonn couldn’t hide her excitement
The 41-year-old looked thrilled to be moving freely again as she worked through a series of exercises designed to rebuild strength and stability in her surgically repaired leg.
Alongside the video, Vonn expressed how meaningful the moment was after months of rehabilitation.
“The face I make when I can actually work out at the gym!” she wrote.
“Makes me so happy and excited I can’t even put it into words!”
For someone who spent much of the last few months wondering how long her recovery would take, the excitement was understandable.

The training showed significant progress
The video showed Vonn performing several challenging exercises that would have seemed impossible immediately after the injury.
Among the exercises were ski-style lateral movements across a resistance mat, medicine ball squats on an inclined platform, Bulgarian split squats and a set of pull-ups.
The training showed not only improved mobility, but also a growing confidence in her injured leg.
For elite athletes, these moments often represent great psychological victories in addition to physical ones.
A crash that changed everything
Vonn’s road back began after a scary accident during her first race at the Milan Cortina Olympics.
While competing in Italy, she clipped a gate during a downhill race and suffered a violent crash that immediately raised concerns among medical personnel.
The skiing legend was left writhing in pain on the track before being lifted off the mountain.
Doctors later diagnosed her with a broken tibia and a broken ankle, injuries serious enough to threaten not only her Olympic dreams, but potentially much more.
The situation became even more serious
As if the broken bones weren’t enough, Vonn’s recovery was complicated by the development of compartment syndrome.
The dangerous condition occurs when pressure builds up inside the muscle spaces and restricts blood flow, creating a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment.
At one point, there were legitimate fears that Vonn might lose her leg.
Fortunately, emergency surgery prevented the worst case.
In an emotional post on social media earlier this year, Vonn credited Dr. Tom Hackett to save her future.
“Dr. Tom Hackett saved my life,” Vonn said.
“He saved my leg from being amputated.”
It was a stunning revelation that highlighted how serious the damage really was behind the scenes.

Another chapter in a career defined by resilience
The crash was especially heartbreaking because Vonn had already overcome enormous obstacles just to return to Olympic competition.
The skiing superstar had previously retired from the sport before making a remarkable comeback attempt.
She competed in the Olympics after undergoing a partial knee replacement and reportedly competed despite having a torn ACL in her left knee.
For many athletes, these circumstances alone would have been enough to end a career.
For Vonn, they became just another challenge to overcome.
Slowly back to normal life
The recovery process is step by step.
In late April, Vonn was spotted navigating Los Angeles International Airport in a wheelchair.
Just weeks later, she made a glamorous appearance at the Met Gala, marking the first time many fans had seen her walk in public without crutches.
Each milestone has represented another small victory in what she has repeatedly described as the toughest rehabilitation of her life.
Vonn previously called the injury “the most extreme and painful and challenging” setback she’s ever experienced.
Considering her long history of injuries throughout her skiing career, that’s saying a lot.
There are still questions about her future
Although Vonn’s recovery continues to impress, her long-term future in competitive skiing remains uncertain.
The Olympic champion has consistently refused to rule out another comeback and has pushed back against suggestions that the injury would force her into retirement.
For now, her focus remains on healing and rebuilding strength.
Given her track record, few people would be willing to bet against her.
Life away from the slopes
During her rehab, Vonn has also attracted attention away from sports.
Recent months have seen increasing speculation about a possible relationship with French skier Matthew Bailet.
The two have been spotted together on several occasions, including outings in New York City and a Broadway performance of “The Outsiders.”
Although neither has publicly addressed the rumors, the sightings have sparked plenty of discussion among fans.
