Since his performance in Dallas Buyers Club in 2013, which earned Jared Leto an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, his acting career seems to have stalled. In October 2025, Leto seemed ready to make an impact at the box office when he starred in ‘Tron: Ares,’ the third installment in the cybertech action series. Not only did he play the titular character Ares, but Leto also produced the film. According to The Hollywood Reporterthe actor had been attached to the project for years and was given the role of producer in 2017. Unfortunately for Leto and Disney executives, the film failed to attract audiences and bombed at the box office with a budget of $180 million. After being paid a hefty sum as lead actor and producer for “Tron: Ares,” insiders told THR Leto wasn’t really worth it protagonist money no more.
After the third ‘Tron’ film’s lackluster box office performance, fans on Reddit wondered if Leto was to blame. It sparked debate about the ‘Suicide Squad’ star’s place among Hollywood stars. “Yeah, it doesn’t really move the needle for the general public,” says one Redditor wrote. “A movie like this needs good word of mouth and a lot of people who review movies hate Leto,” said another theorized.
Around the same time that the film was struggling at the box office, it was announced that Leto had been cast as Skeletor in a live-action ‘Masters of the Universe’. Once again, fans questioned Leto’s draw, as one Redditor thought studios were trying to recapture the old magic that the actor once brought. Another user, bluntly described Leto as “box office poison.” According to PukLeto himself “wasn’t happy with” the final version of the film. Unfortunately for everyone involved, the dislike for Leto had been building for years.
Jared Leto’s method acting bothered a lot of people
The public’s growing distaste for Jared Leto stems in part from his reputation for upsetting his peers with his method acting. Leto’s acting process on set was confirmed by the director of “Morbius” in April 2022. To promote the film’s release, director Daniel Espinosa spoke with UPROXX about rumors that Leto used real crutches when he wasn’t filming, to portray his physically affected character, Dr. Michael Morbius, better to imitate. “Because I think what Jared is thinking, what Jared believes, is that somehow the pain of those movements… was necessary, because he’s had this pain his whole life,” the director told the outlet. Reports circulated that because Leto insisted on using crutches, his bathroom breaks were taking much longer than necessary.
When news of Leto’s behavior reached X, fans slammed the actor for his bizarre insistence on method acting. “Jared Leto did everything he could to make Morbius earn only 17% of the rotten tomatoes?” An wrote. “I’ve never seen such a lack of self-awareness in an actor,” says another added. As with other vehicles starring Leto, the film bombed at the box office.
Prior to that role, Leto rubbed some co-stars the wrong way when he employed method acting tactics while playing the Joker in 2016’s “Suicide Squad.” After the film’s release, Leto admitted he was unclear about his future as a Batman villain. “I’m a little confused too, but yeah, there are some things happening in the DC world,” he shared Official pop drop in September 2017. In 2019, the movie “Joker” was released by DC Comics and Joaquin Phoenix was asked to play the Clown Prince instead of Leto. Unfortunately, some stars just don’t understand that no one likes them anymore.
