When Hannah Britt heard she had a plus one for Harry’s sold-out show in London, she knew she had to get one. And Harry proved once again why his star has gone stratospheric
There is something special about Harry Styles. From the moment he appeared on the stage as a 16-year-old boy x factor In 2010, a twinkle in his eye told us he was going to be a star. And, fast forward 16 years, that star has gone stratospheric. Currently in the middle of a historic 12-night residency at London’s iconic Wembley Station, I was there on the third night with 90,000 dedicated fans.
“My sister took me to that audition right up the street from here,” the 32-year-old told the crowd. They shouted in response. The loudest of them all came from right next to me, my Harry Styles Superfan friend Charlotte. When I heard I had another chance to see her hero, I knew I had to bring her along. And I’m so glad I did…
When Harry started his 23-song set list with Are You Listening Yet from new album Kiss All the Time, she thought, “He’s in another world.” Disco, sometimes. After this the path was made for Golden. Harry looked like a charming geography teacher in a shirt, blazer and pink jumper, with a small clapped kiss artfully placed on the collar.
“Please feel free to be who you’ve always wanted to be tonight,” Harry told the crowd, asking the audience to join hands with those next to them. It set an atmosphere of kindness and acceptance for the night — and great PR for the moms in the room.
“Honor Your Mother,” Harry sang in Dance No More, because I made a mental note to recite it to my kids. To my right, American comedian Ellen DeGeneres and her wife Portia de Rossi meandered to the next track: Music for a Sushi Restaurant, followed by Take Back, which they humorously mixed. soccer’Coming Home’, refers to an England World Cup game which was taking place elsewhere.
When Harry performed his first show in Amsterdam, fans complained of a restricted view due to the staging, which created a giant walkway around the arena floor, with several high bridges. Yet Harry represents a new era of fan collaboration, because by the time the residency came to London, most of these bridges had been removed.
“His bone structure is ridiculous,” Charlotte said, as Harry sat down to play the beautiful song, Coming Up Roses, at the piano with a string section.
When their new album was released in March, it received mixed reviews. Many people liked it, some wished for more classic pop bangers. But disco is an album made for dancing.
And actually, when Aperture came out it was my song of the night so far. Wembley Stadium was transformed into a giant disco ball as Harry took us all to Berghain for the evening. The performance of Ready, Steady, Go and Pop on the X-Stage was also a blast.
Without many visuals, dancing troops or stunts, there was a lot of pressure on Harry as an individual to attract the crowd’s attention. But that’s the thing with Harry, you really can’t take your eyes off him. He is the best in the game right now. “I honestly feel like I could sit here for three days and not get bored,” Charlotte said. And I couldn’t help but agree.
As the show ended with Sign of the Times and As It Was, fireworks lit up the London sky, Harry put his marathon training into practice and ran around the stadium to say goodbye. “My face hurts from smiling,” Charlotte said as we sang our way back to the tube. It was a lot of fun, and exactly the kind of party we all need right now.
