Over the past several years, Netflix has become notorious for pulling the plug TV shows that failed to connect with viewers or were panned by critics. However, one of the streaming giant’s latest cancellations seemed to fly in the face of everything subscribers expect from the company. After the series became one of the company’s “most watched” shows and was almost universally praised, Netflix suddenly axed it anyway.
Netflix canceled Boots after just one season
On 15 December 2025, Deadline reported it Netflix had canceled Bootsa military coming-of-age comedy-drama. The series was adapted from the memoir “The Pink Marine” by Greg Cope White and executive produced by one of the greatest legends in television history, Norman Lear. That was it the last series that Lear helped bring to the world before he died in 2023. The series’ first and only season consisted of eight episodes, premiering on October 9, 2025.
Boots was a series that followed Miles Heizer as Cameron Cope, a closeted teenager who joined the US Marine Corps in the 1990s during the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” era. The formerly bullied young man finds an unexpected brotherhood while dealing with the pressures of boot camp.
Boots was one of Netflix’s most watched series
After Boots was canceled by Netflix, Deadline published an article detailing how strong the show’s ratings were before it was axed. The business noted that it “was no. 23 on the list of most watched series in the period July-December with 30.7 million views.” While that fact alone made the show’s cancellation surprising, there is an important context that makes it even more remarkable.
Given the sheer number of shows Netflix users can choose from, being listed among the company’s top 25 series over a six-month period is a huge deal. However, boots’ performance was even more remarkable because it premiered on October 9, 2025. As a result, it was not even available to watch for a little more than half of the qualifying period.
The business continued to note that Boots outperformed several renewed series in the ranking of Netflix’s “most watched” shows during the period. For example, the second season of the romantic comedy series Kristen Bell and Adam Brody Nobody wants this was ranked number 24. Among them, The Witcher Season 4 was listed at No. 29 and Season 3 of The Diplomat was ranked number 41.
Boots were loved by critics and fans
It can often feel like shows can be a hit with viewers or critics, but not both. However, Boots managed to be embraced by the two groups during their short eight-episode run.
From the viewer’s point of view, Boots currently has a Popcornmeter score of 90% Rotten tomatoes based on more than 500 ratings from the website’s users. In addition, several articles described how upset fans were after the series’ early end was announced, including those from The TV cave and Gayty. Even months later, fans are still posting about how upset they are on social media. For example, on June 25, 2026, one user wrote, “I still can’t believe they canceled the show Boots. It was so f***** g good 🙁 I’m mad.”
Critics also welcomed the series as it has a 90% Tomatometer score Rotten tomatoes based on more than 40 professional reviews. It was also nominated for an NAACP Image Award, a GLAAD Media Award and the won a Queerties Award for Best TV Comedy. October 2025 Looper review epitomized how critics celebrated the series as it labeled it as “high energy, funny and heartwarmingly emotional.” The outlet rated the show “surprisingly poignant and emotional” a nine out of ten, and praised it as a series that “yet soars above and beyond due to its emotional but funny approach to admittedly serious material.”
Netflix chief executive tackles Boots cancellation controversy
Given that Boots was a hit based on several metrics, the fact that it was quietly canceled inspired outrage in some observers. This led many fans to wonder about the motivation behind the programming decision, with some concluding that it may have been caused by political considerations. This is because the United States War Department issued a statement that called the series “wake garbage” in October 2025.
When Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos attended the Directors Guild of America Awards in February 2026, Variations Marc Malkin asked him if that statement caused Boots to be cancelled. In response, Netflix’s boss categorically denied that this was the case. “Absolutely not. Those are all business decisions based on the audience versus the price of the show. Do the people who push play see it to the end? Do they give it a few thumbs up? Does it keep growing? All those things. That decision is made every day.”
Sarandos went on to further comment on his personal feelings about Boots and the response of the ventilator to its cancellation. “The beauty of why people get upset when you cancel a show is because they love them. That’s the best part of our business, it’s that people really love the product. And it’s heartbreaking to cancel a show, ever, especially a show that Norman Lear brought to me. It was his last show. I loved that show. I’m a fan.”
