Warning! Spoilers for House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 1 ahead!George RR Martin has been openly critical of HBO’s approach to his story in House of the Dragon. The the author prefers that significant changes to his canon be avoided. Showrunner Ryan Condal, on the other hand, seems to find his various tweaks to the story justified. Among book fans, Martin’s opinion is typically the most popular. However, House of the Dragon‘s new section is an argument for Condal’s side.
The premiere of House of the Dragon season 3 was really excellent. This had everything to do with the fact that even book fans really had no idea what was going to happen. We’re halfway through this series, and the first two seasons pretty much lined up with canon on the surface, but made significant adjustments to the deeper context. This established the idea that from episode to episode of House of the Dragonour expectations may be contradicted at any time. This show is a wild card.
So while fans of Fire & Blood started Battle of the Gullet knowing that Jacaerys would die, House of the Dragon season 3 faked us out on several occasions. It looked for a moment that Rhaenyra, not Jace, would fly into battle. Once that shift was adjusted, Rhaena’s entry to prevent Jace from being pulled into the water (his cannon death) again hinted that the prince could live. In the end, of course, everything happened more or less as it should. Still, we were all kept on our toes.
House Of The Dragon has made itself completely unpredictable
House of the Dragon season 3 episode 1 essentially used the show’s own reputation to appeal to book fans and thus enhance their viewing experience. The audience of a book-to-screen adaptation is divided into two groups – those who are familiar with the source and those who are not. If a movie or TV show is adapted faithfully, book fans will typically be happy, but they’ll miss out on the surprises that non-book fans enjoy. It is difficult with projects within Game of Thrones franchiseas the viewing experience is all about shock and awe.
Book fans may be disappointed by some of them House of the Dragonprevious changes. Many of them were real jokers. Still, it’s hard to deny that not knowing if the show would actually dare to change the outcome of the Battle of the Gullet made the whole experience more exciting. We were ready to be angry if Jace lived, but that also meant we were almost as shocked as ignorant viewers when the moment actually happened.
It’s hard to deny that not knowing if the show would actually dare to change the outcome of the Battle of the Gullet made the whole experience more exciting.
It’s interesting to consider in this context how book faithfulness might not be the holy grail of TV adaptations we thought it was, especially in a project like Game of Thrones. A perfectly aligned story brings many benefits. However, it is worth considering what we would have lost House of the Dragons premiere, Condal had not played a bit with our expectations.
House of the Dragon is in a unique position compared to Game of Thrones (and other stories)
Before anyone grabs the torches and pitchforks, it’s important to clarify that for most adaptations, book fidelity will be preferred. It’s pretty easy to say, for example Game of Thrones started to go wrong when it ran out of Martin’s source material. House of the Dragon is a very different bag. Martin’s Fire & Blood is written like a history book in the world. So if something changes in the show, the discrepancy can be blamed on an unreliable narrator or information being recorded incorrectly. This creates a lot of wiggle room in the narrative that other stories don’t necessarily have.
of course, House of the Dragon still have to be careful. These teases in the Season 3 premiere were a lot of fun, and they let book fans into the thrill of the unknown when it normally wouldn’t be possible. However, it worked because the journey was different while the outcome of the story remained the same. House of the Dragon will need to maintain a careful balance, preferably avoiding some of the more unnecessary changes from the past. Still, entertainment is prioritized, and in this regard, it’s hard to complain.
