Scotland got their group campaign off to the best start with a 1–0 win over Haiti on 13 June boston stadium. The victory sparked huge celebrations among the supporters who remained in Boston ahead of their next match against Morocco on Friday, June 19.
With fans staying in the city between matches, Celebration This is continuing throughout Boston and the impact on local businesses is already beginning to be seen. A viral TikTok clip from Boston sports radio station WEEI Sports captured the scale of the Scottish attendance, with three broadcasters expressing disbelief at how quickly the city has changed.
A radio host shared a quote from Hennessy Bar’s chief operating officer downtown bostonWho said the scale of the Tartan Army was unlike anything seen in decades.
Reiterating the bar owner’s quote, she said: “We’ve been here for over 30 years. We’ve never seen anything like this. We tripled St Patrick’s Day over the weekend with Scottish visitors. They brought back the fun, which was lost.”
Demand was so intense that, radio hosts said, the beer in the bar was completely sold out by Sunday night, leading to emergency stock restocking before Scotland’s next game on Friday.
The clip went on to highlight similar scenes elsewhere in the city, with Federal Wine and Spirits also reporting popular beer brands selling out quickly. Radio hosts then recalled the moment summarizing the Tartan Army in Boston by saying: “A patron came in and bought two bottles of water and was accosted by 20 Scottish shoppers inside the store.”
The radio station burst into laughter upon hearing the story, and one host simply replied: “It was a lot of fun there.”
As the discussion continued, the hosts considered the wider impact of Scotland fans, suggesting that the city has adapted in a positive way to the Tartan Army.
The host said, “It’s part of a feel-good story and it’s a big party that’s going to be great for the city, it’s letting us loose a little bit.”
Another said that restrictions around nightlife, shops and travel felt more relaxed during such major events and the overall impression was overwhelmingly positive.
He said, “I think shows like this show that if people are given a chance to celebrate, it’s good for business, everyone is having a good time. It’s not chaos in the streets.”
As one host summed up the atmosphere: “I didn’t feel the slightest bit uncomfortable partying there. The people from Scotland, the people from Boston, did a great job.”
Broadcasters then made some comparisons between Boston’s own sports history, comparing the traveling support given by the Tartan Army to Patriots fans during their initial Super Bowl run.
As one of the hosts said: “They’re coming to town, they love their team. You can understand it as a Patriots fan because it’s been 28 years since they’ve been to the World Cup. And it’s almost like that first Super Bowl where all the Patriots fans traveled to New Orleans.”

He continued: “But they’ve taken over the city brilliantly and it’s more than just Hennessy, there have been bars that apparently ran out of beer this weekend, which has never happened in the city.”
The comments section on TikTok was filled with Scots as they shared their thoughts on running out of alcohol at the bar. One Scottish user wrote: “In Scotland you can’t buy alcohol between 10pm and 10am unless it’s in a licensed venue. We’re not even allowed to drink at football matches. It’s a big deal to us that we can drink whenever we want.”
As another agreed, saying: “To be clear, we’re like this all the time, it’s not just the World Cup. We’ll celebrate anything.”
Meanwhile Boston locals have welcomed the Tartan Army with open arms, as one American said in the comments section: “On behalf of anyone who lives in Boston, we want the Tartan Army back every year!”
With the second penning: “As the city hosting Scotland for two group games during this World Cup, Boston certainly wins.”
