Kirk Herbstreit says the Brendan Sorsby ruling essentially means college athletes “can do whatever they want” because the NCAA is now essentially toothless. One of his biggest concerns is that Brendan Sorsby’s order has effectively left college sports without a real governing body.

“I think what you said about gambling and everyone’s been talking about it ever since, you know, you don’t have to go to Vegas or have a bookmaker, you know, now you just do it on your phone and everyone’s worried about how this would affect the athletes themselves,” Kirk Herbstreit said up The Dan Patrick Show. “And you know, the NFL and professional sports have made a pretty strong statement. You know, we’ve seen NFL players who have been cut for seasons because they got caught up in this.”

“And I think the most important thing for me, and I think for all of us who follow college footballWho is the sport’s governing body, and what power does that governing body have, if any? When the NCAA heard about this, they ruled him ineligible. And as we have seen in many other cases, when someone finds out that the NCAA If you didn’t give them the answer they wanted, they’d say, ‘Okay, no problem. We’re just going to go to our local jurisdiction, the local judge, and see if we can make this happen.’”

Kirk Herbsteit finds the Brendan Sorsby situation ‘sickening’

“And I think the perception is that the judge in this case shows up in a black suit, with a red tie, and asks for an autograph after the proceedings,” Herbstreit continued. “And I think that’s the perception of how the sport is spiraling out of control and no one is in charge, let alone the gambling part of it.

“Don’t know Brendan Sorsby. I feel bad about the whole situation, but you know what, if this was my son and he did what it was 9,000 bets? And I don’t know how much or how little he gambled on. It’s just a premise behind what happened here and the fact that the NCAA ruled him ineligible and then we find a local judge again.

“It’s sickening that if you don’t hear what you like, you can just go to the local judge and get the answer you want,” he added. “I just don’t know where this ends. If this is where we are right now, you can do pretty much anything you want in this sport, and if someone says something, just find a local judge to tell you the answer you want to get.”

Early 2024, Herbstreit explained on social media why he believed the exodus of college football coaches to the NFL was just beginning at that time.

“Without meaningful boundaries and regulations, coaches given real opportunities in the NFL will be gone,” he wrote.

“This trend will continue until there is a new governing body and a CBA comes into being with a player entity or union, which would include things like NIL-Transfer Portal and ultimately revenue sharing.

“The sport is spiraling out of control, as we know, and many of these coaches aren’t waiting around. Just a new reality for the sport.”
