A routine bike ride through Washington, DC, turned into an unexpected legal ordeal for former Olympic canoeist David “Davey” Hearn, who was arrested near the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool after authorities accused him of damaging government property.
The incident has since sparked debate after Hearn insisted he never vandalized anything and was merely investigating what appeared to be a damaged section of the pool’s newly installed liner.
The arrest quickly gained national attention, especially since it occurred just hours before President Donald Trump publicly complained about alleged vandalism at the newly renovated landmark.
Olympic athlete says he was simply curious
Hearn, a three-time Olympian who represented the United States in canoe slalom competition, said he stopped at the reflecting pool during an extended bike ride through the nation’s capital.
According to his account, he noticed what appeared to be a loose section of line along the edge of the pool.
The reflecting pool recently underwent a renovation project that cost more than $14 million, including the installation of a new blue-colored liner.
Hearn said the partially detached material caught his attention.
Curious as to what he saw, he reached out for the loose section to inspect it more closely.
Moments later, he says, law enforcement approached and arrested him.

Arrest leads to hours in custody
United States Park Police took Hearn into custody on a misdemeanor charge of destruction of government property.
The former Olympian said he was transported to a Park Police facility and remained detained for several hours before being released later that evening.
The experience came as a shock to Hearn, who claims he has never damaged the property.
According to his version of events, the material had already peeled off when he arrived and remained attached after he touched it.
He insists he neither removed nor damaged any part of the lining.
Conflicting accounts arise
Video footage circulating online added another layer to the story.
Conservative journalist Emily Miller posted footage of the arrest and alleged that Hearn interfered with maintenance work taking place near the pool.
According to Miller’s account, Hearn grabbed a hose used by workers cleaning algae from the water.
Hear disputes that claim.
While he acknowledged that his bike may have accidentally come into contact with the hose, he denied that he had intentionally touched or disturbed maintenance equipment.
The various accounts have given rise to discussion about exactly what happened before the arrest.

Reflective pool renovation faces scrutiny
The controversy comes at a time when the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has already drawn attention.
The recently completed renovation project was designed to improve the appearance and functionality of one of Washington’s most recognizable landmarks.
However, reports of algae growth, peeling materials and other maintenance problems have drawn criticism in recent weeks.
Questions about the quality of the renovation have become part of a wider public discussion surrounding the project.
Hearn’s arrest only heightened interest in the pool’s condition.
Trump weighs in
The situation further escalated after President Donald Trump posted several messages on Truth Social addressing what he described as vandalism and damage at the reflecting pool.
Trump claimed that individuals had tried to damage the renovated landmark and suggested that several arrests had been made in connection with incidents involving the site.
The president also referred to other alleged acts of vandalism around the National Mall and promised that repairs would be made quickly.
His comments heightened public attention to the reflecting pool and further focused Hearn’s arrest.

Court date scheduled
For now, the legal process will determine what happens.
Hearn is expected to appear in court next month to address the misdemeanor charge.
The former Olympian continues to deny any wrongdoing and has maintained that he never intended to damage government property.
Whether prosecutors aggressively pursue the case or additional evidence changes the narrative remains to be seen.
