Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 will have fewer episodes than planned.
The live-action remake’s original episode count has been revealed before the series was forced to follow Netflix’s scripted mandate. Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 takes its story from Season 2 of the original animated series, titled “Book Two: Earth.” The upcoming season will see Aang, Katara and Sokka travel across the Earth Kingdom in search of an earthbending trainer for Aang, encountering a skilled blind bender named Toph in the process. Netflix will release all episodes of the upcoming season on June 25, 2026.
But speaking with SFX Magazine (via Game radar), executive producer Christine Boylan revealed that Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 will have one less episode than season 1 due to Netflix script mandates. While the season was slated to have eight episodes, it was cut to seven by the studio. Boylan’s statement seems to hint at what this episode may have been, confirming that there will be “elements” of the anthology episode “The Tales of Ba Sing Sae” in the upcoming live-action episodes.
See what Boylan had to say below:
Netflix provides very little real estate when it comes to episodes. We have seven episodes this time, and while we wrote eight, cutting back forced us to focus on key themes. So while we knew we couldn’t include everything, fans can definitely expect to see elements of the fan-favorite episode ‘The Tales Of Ba Sing Se’ throughout the series.
That means Season 2 of the 20-episode animated show will have to be compressed into about seven hours of television, one episode less time than Season 1 earned. This could make some story beats tighter as the show has to cut and rearrange elements and grades from The Last Airbender. Fortunately, executive producer and director Jabbar Raisani confirmed that a number of key episodes will still appear in live-action, including “Zuko Alone.” He also hints at other aspects of the franchise that will appear in the upcoming episodes:
There are certain episodes we knew we couldn’t cut. For example, we knew Zuko Alone was going to be in there, and it was such an honor to be able to direct that episode as well. The thing is, there’s never enough time to do everything one-on-one, but we’re trying to take as much inspiration as possible from every aspect of Avatar: The Last Airbender, be it the comics, novels, or the show, and we hope that this live-action version can create excitement for those other aspects of ATLA, and newcomers to the series will go ahead and explore them.
This cut of episodes makes it unclear if the upcoming season will have longer episodes than Season 1, or if it will simply have less time to tell its story. Avatar: The Last Airbender season 1 ended similarly to “Book One: Water”, where Aang begins to master waterbending while accepting his role as the Avatar. It also set the stage for Sozin’s Comet, which is expected to be approached differently in terms of the timeline of the live-action show.
In addition Avatar: The Last Airbender season 3 has already been filmed, which will close the translation of the animated trilogy into a new medium. However, it is not yet confirmed how many episodes the final season will be. Since Season 2 only has seven episodes to tell its story, it seems that Netflix wants tight control over how much time the show has. Season 2 also comes over two years after Season 1, meaning there will be fewer episodes than expected despite the long wait.
But the producers of Avatar: The Last Airbender does not seem to have an impact on this, which means that the number of episodes was dictated by Netflix, probably until the end of the season. While it remains unconfirmed which episodes will correspond to those in the animated series, it seems that the show will make an effort to bring every important facet of the original to live-action, even if some ideas need to be rearranged.
