Is Claire really Alice? “The Way Home” Series Finale Explained (SPOILERS)

WARNING! THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS ABOUT THE ROAD HOME SERIES FINALE!The way home The series finale finally addressed the long-standing fan theory that Nick’s invisible fiancée, Claire, is actually his first love, Alice. Alice Dhawan (Sadie Laflamme-Snow) first met young Nick Oates (Samuel Braun) in 1999 at The Cove while cruising across the pond. Their love for music brought them closer and they fell in love after sharing a kiss.

However, Alice eventually had to return to her own time period in the present day, when Nick (Kerry James) had aged about 40 years. Later, Alice went back in time to Y2K New Year’s Eve, where she and younger Nick kissed. In the present, Alice was upset that Nick didn’t seem to remember who she was, but she was thrilled when she later overheard him admit to Elliot Augustine (Evan Williams) that he still remembered Alice because he never forgot his first love. Alice was ecstatic because Nick was also her first love.

Alice and Young Nick shared a few more encounters, and he eventually found out about time travel as an adult. He became engaged to a woman named Claire, who was never seen on The way home. This led some viewers to believe that Claire was actually an older version of Alice and the show kept her true identity a secret. Now the series finale has addressed that fan theory.

Why did Way Home fans think Claire was actually Alice?

The way home fans first began to believe that Nick’s fiancée, Claire, was actually Alice because they could see how much they loved each other in the past and how much they still cared for each other in the present, even though they couldn’t be together because Alice was still a teenager and Nick was an adult. Their current relationship was sweet and innocent because older Nick always respected the boundaries of his relationship with young Alice.

Fans noticed that Claire’s name was an anagram for “R Alice”, leading them to believe that either Alice and Nick became a couple when she became an adult in the present day, or she traveled from the future when she was old enough to date Nick and they became engaged. This combined with the fact that Claire was never shown on The way homesupported the theory that Claire and Alice were the same person.

Did The Way Home Series Finale Confirm Claire Is Alice?

Although The way home series finale did not explicitly confirm that Claire is actually Alice, a scene at the end of the episode titled “Ahead by a Century” strongly suggested that the theory could be correct. Older Nick had seen Alice kiss Max Goodwin (Dale Whibley) after he also saw her in an awkward moment with him, where Max told her she could have the kind of relationship she wanted with him. Nick had encouraged her to pursue love with Max. After she realized that Nick had seen her kiss Max, Alice jokingly told him: “This is getting ridiculous.” He replied, “Oh, you know you love me, Alice,” to which she replied, “I do. In my own very bizarre way I do.”

Alice then congratulated Nick for finally buying Colton’s (Jefferson Brown) boat from Del (Andie MacDowell). Nick told her he thought he and Claire would make a lot of good memories on the boat, and “be a regular Del and Colton.” Alice then asked, “Will I ever meet Claire?” Nick replied, “I’m sure you will one day.” The look on Nick’s face and a change in the music made it seem like Nick might be sharing a moment with Claire because she was actually Alice from the future.

The creators and executive producers of The way homeHeather Conkie and Alexandra Clarke, who are mother and daughter, leave the Claire-Is-Alice theory open to fan interpretation. In an interview with TV InsiderClarke laughed when asked about the mystery surrounding Alice’s meeting with Claire.

Conkie then said: “We’re the ones being cheeky because there are some who actually think Alice is Claire and vice versa. We left it open.” Clarke added, “We leave it open because you never know. There’s never say never, as we say, never say never. And we were just very cheeky.”

In an interview with PeopleConkie and Clarke also explained their reasoning for not revealing Claire i the series finale of The way home. When asked if there was a mystery there, Clarke replied, “It’s fun because we love the trope of the person you’ll never meet, the invisible character that people talk about but you’ll never meet. It’s fun… But when we started to hold it back and fans caught wind of it… this whole beautiful theory developed that it was Alice, and I think it’s great. Yeah, I’m not going to lie a little bit about it in a cheeory because we’re a great finale.”

Conkie stated, “At some point, that age difference doesn’t make as much of a difference as it does when they first meet in their real life. We probably never would have done that, but just to give the music a little bit of a change, when at the very end he said, ‘Oh, maybe one day you can…'”

Clarke added that the questions raised in the final “are funny,” and that they were “trying to encourage the fans to write the next chapter themselves.” She explained, “Imagine what Nick meant by that last little bit of saying, ‘Oh, I think you’ll meet her one day.'” Clarke explained that she and Conkie left some questions about The way home unanswered because they love and appreciate all the fan theories. The “wanted to give the fans a moment to encourage them to be Kat and write their story about what might happen next. I hope the questions we answered are the ones that fundamentally needed to be answered.”

So is Claire Alice? The answer to that question is now open. The fact that the series finale of The way home didn’t disprove the theory by showing Claire with Nick hinting that maybe it’s true after all and Alice and Nick getting back together whether Alice grows up in real time or when she travels back to him from the future. However, it is also possible that Claire is a completely different person. It’s now up to fans to write their own ending to Alice and Nick’s love story, which was what made the series finale of The way home so fascinating.
