General Hospital recasts main character

General Hospital has recast the role of Emily “Scout” Cain, a main character played by Cosette Abinante for four years since 2022. Scout, daughter of Drew Cain (Cameron Mathison) and the late Sam McCall (Kelly Monaco), is at the center of one of the long-running soap opera’s hottest of the two most prominent family members in the show’s history.

Scout has become one of the most important characters in Port Charles, as the question of her custody after Sam’s death has put her in the spotlight and created chaos in her family. Drew had issued restraining orders against Sam’s family, including Scout’s half-brother, Danny (Asher Antonyzyn); her grandmother, Alexis (Nancy Lee Grahn); and her aunts, Kristina (Kate Mansi) and Molly (Kristen Vaganos).

But after Drew’s wife Willow (Katelyn MacMullen) secretly drugged him, causing locked-in syndrome that everyone else believes is the result of a stroke, she agreed to allow Scout to live with Alexis. However, this all changed when Jenz Sidwell (Carlo Rota), who supplies Willow with the medicine that keeps Drew paralyzed, demanded that Scout move back in with Willow and Drew. Willow told Alexis that she wanted Scout back, but that she would drop the final restraining order against Danny. Danny, Charlotte (Bluesy Burke) and Rocco (Finn Carr) have been major players in General Hospital teenage scene, and now it looks like Scout will be joining their group as well.

According to Soap Opera DigestKayden Brenna Tokarski takes over the role of scout from Abinante, starting in July. On June 1, when General Hospital shared a video of the cast celebrating filming the show’s 16,000th episode, fans noticed Tokarski in the clip and many guessed that she would play Scout.

General Hospital is Tokarski’s first daytime acting role, but the 16-year-old has been acting professionally since the age of 10, starring in various TV shows and films. One of her most notable roles was playing a younger version of Julia Roberts’ character, Martha, in the Starz limited series, Gas lit.

Soap Opera Digest reported it General Hospital reworks Scout to age the character. Scout will be the latest character to experience SORAS (soap opera rapid aging syndrome), a soap opera trend where child characters skip years of their lives, transforming them from children to teenagers or young adults overnight. The Scout character was born on screen on February 28, 2017, so she would therefore only be nine years old.

It will be interesting to watch General Hospital decides to age any of the other younger characters, as there is a large group of children in the show, including Wiley, Amelia, Leo, Avery, Donna, Georgie, James and Bailey Lu.

Since Scout is such a big player in the Cain/Quatermaine and Davis families, it’s no wonder that General Hospital ages her so she can participate in juicier stories. At 16, Tokarski is significantly older than 13-year-old Abinante. It will be interesting to see how an older Scout reacts to her custody questions and when the truth inevitably comes out about Willow’s role in her father’s locked-in syndrome, and also that she shot him last year and got away with it. Abinante will be greatly missed in the role of scout, but Tokarski will usher in a new era for the character.
