When you receive a gift socks from an established brand like Nikeyou expect quality. Unfortunately, as explained in a viral video, one TikToker (@ryguyactive) remained thoroughly disappointed by his festive gift.
With a black sock on his hand, the TikToker said: “Can someone at Nike tell me what’s going on with your socks?”
“I bought some of your socks in 2015 and they lasted until last Christmas,” he continued. “I threw away everything that was mine.”
He added: “Finally I ripped out all the holes. In the end they all went bad so I threw them all away.”
Additionally, he continued, “I asked for socks for Christmas, and all my pairs of socks for Christmas all have the exact same hole in the heel.”
Additionally, as he said this, he was wearing a black Nike sock on his hand, drawing attention to the gaping hole in the heel portion of the sock.
“All my socks off,” he added.
“You want a billion dollars for a pair of socks? I’ve tied the knot, and that’s about all I asked for Christmas, and it’s June, and they’re all – they’re all destroyed. This is ridiculous. This is – the demise is crazy.”
The video has been viewed 1.1 million times. BroBible contacted TikToker via direct message from TikTok and Nike via email.
Did people agree with him?
This wouldn’t be the first time Nike has… design flaw– with the World Cup jersey as a recent example. However, most commenters sympathized with the TikToker.
“Anyone remember how the heels and toes used to be thicker?” someone asked.
“It’s the fabrication…” explained a second. “They used to be 100% cotton and now most are polyester.”
“Agreed,” a third added. “I thought it was just us!”
While a fourth admitted: “Ohhh I owe my son an apology. I thought he was rubbing his heels together!!!!”
And a fifth chimed in: “Same goes for my childhood socks. I’m done buying Nike socks.”
On the other hand, there were commentators who had reservations.
“Nothing, and I mean nothing, is made to last anymore, and that’s on purpose,” said a sixth. “More money, more waste.”
Why do Nike socks keep getting holes?
In addition to those in the comments with the same problem, there is also a Redditor describing an identical problem.
In a two-year-old post on r/mildlyinfuriating subreddit, the user shared a photo of his Nike socks in a row, all with the exact same hole in the heel.
“Same hole in all my Nike socks,” he wrote.
One Reddit user offered a solution, writing, “I switched to Darn Tough a few years ago. They are pricey per pair, but have a lifetime warranty. They will forever replace any socks you wear out.”
Another joked: “Rub some lotion on those heels.”
While a third said: “Do you happen to wear crocs? I find that the few times I wear crocs with socks, they end up with holes in the heels.”
Less helpfully, a fourth commented: “No offense, but that’s what you get when you buy for the brand and not the quality.”
While a fifth theorized a different issue: “I have the same problem but I don’t know the reason, but my theory is that I feel my feet too much and when they get wet and I walk in my safety shoes for 9 hours the sock rubs around and doesn’t make holes. Another theory is that the sweet, when dried, makes the sock hard and therefore tears a hole more easily when walking.”
In response, the original Redditor said, “My feet sweat a lot too, so maybe that’s the problem.”
At least for the Redditor, it seems like they can benefit from this waterproof socks– but when it comes to the hole issue, the solution seems less clear-cut.
