It’s a new one direct current Universe, but the results among critics look much the same.
The current regime at DC Studios released their second film this week: Great girl directed by Craig Gillespie and starring Milly Alcock as the Woman of Tomorrow. It may still be a box office hit, but it didn’t do very well with the critics. At the time of writing, it currently sits at a poor rating of 57 on the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. That’s based on reviews from more than 230 critics listed on the site.
That’s a grim comedown from last summer’s first new DC Universe movie Superman written and directed by James Gunn. It received an 83 on Rotten Tomatoes, up 26 points Great girl. Gunn is also the co-CEO of DC Studios and as such oversees all of the company’s films, including Great girl. But whatever input he had on the final product wasn’t enough to make it a critical hit.

That score, which is still in flux to some extent, moves Great girl more in line with the much-maligned DC Extended Universe launched in 2013 by director Zack Snyder. While some DCEU titles received strong reviews from critics, including Wonder Woman (93 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes) and Shazam! (90), eight different DCEU films currently have poor scores on the site, including Black Adam (39), Snyders Man of steel (56) and Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice (28), and Suicide squad (26).
Despite the fact that I really enjoyed Gunn’s Superman and I loved the comic book series that was new Great girl was based, I’m among the 43 percent of critics who didn’t like the film. As I put it in my judgementthe film’s creative problems are…
…particularly disappointing because the new DC Universe got off to such a promising start with last year’s Superman. Milly Alcock’s Supergirl was in that film and was so instantly likable in her short screen time that it raised high expectations that her spin-off won’t come close to being a match. That’s despite the presence of Superman’s biggest scene-stealer – the dashing superdog Krypto – and even the Man of Steel himself, played by David Corenswet in a small but important supporting role.
Next The flash (which actually has a somewhat chilly score of 63 if you can believe that) and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom in 2023, Warner Bros resets their DC team and brings Gunn over from Marvel to oversee the creative side of the company. He relaunched DC’s cinematic universe, starting with his new interpretation of Superman. That movie did well, but Great girl is not rated nearly as well by critics, to say the least.
There are still reasons to be optimistic about DC’s future. This fall Clay face seems like a real departure for the company, and potentially a very interesting one. And they already have a new one Superman sequel coming next year from Gunn and Corenswet, with another Batman film from director Matt Reeves in the line. But if nothing else Great girl shows: these comic book movies are not easy to make.
