It’s been 16 years already Jesse Eisenberg debuted his iconic, neurotic portrayal of the Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg in David Fincher’S The social network.
The role earned Eisenberg a Best Actor nomination at the 83rd Academy Awards and made the then 27-year-old actor an A-list talent in Hollywood.
That said, many were surprised when it was announced that Jeremy Strong would play Zuckerberg Aaron Sorkin’s upcoming Social network follow-up, The social reckoning. But Sorkin, who wrote the screenplay for the first film and both wrote and directed the upcoming spiritual successor to the Oscar-winning film, says he tried very hard to get Eisenberg to reprise the role.
“I felt like it was his, and he was definitely tested,” Sorkin said Vanity fairhe revealed spent three days trying to convince Eisenberg to return.
“He simply didn’t want to be confused with Mark Zuckerberg anymore, that he has problems with that man. He doesn’t like kids coming up to him at airports with business cards that say ‘I’m CEO, bra’ for him to sign,” the filmmaker continued.

Instead, Strong was selected to play the technology mogul The social reckoningwhich follows the true story of former Facebook engineer and Wall Street Journal reporter who worked to expose Facebook’s internal investigative secrets, including the company’s role in spreading harmful misinformation, ties to political violence and the impact on children’s mental health.
The Succession The star actually lobbied for the role during a meeting with Sorkin at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party in 2025, where he told the filmmaker that if Eisenberg declined to return, he would be interested in the role.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4 in 2025, Eisenberg admitted that he “doesn’t want to see myself associated with someone like that” when it comes to his connection to Facebook’s controversial CEO.
Eisenberg, he said disagrees with Zuckerberg’s contributions to the spread of political and social disinformation spread online.
“It’s not like I was a great golfer or anything and now people think I’m a great golfer. It’s like this guy is doing things that are problematic – taking away fact-checking and safety concerns, further endangering people who are already threatened in this world,” the spokesperson said. During a separate interview with TodayEisenberg also admitted that he has simply outgrown the character.
“Listen, for reasons that have nothing to do with how great that movie will be, really. But when you play a character, at some point you feel like you’ve grown into something else… But it really is a beautiful movie. I’m friends with Aaron Sorkin who wrote and directed this movie, and all the reasons why I’m not in it are completely unrelated to how brilliant it will be.”
